As a massive Sonic fan, the trailer didn’t make me angry, just depressed. I’m depressed because over two decades, Hollywood still doesn’t seem to care about making video games based movies good, just to get those gamers into the theater and buying tickets. I think Paramount made the model look like dogcrap, because hey, there’s no such thing as bad publicity, right? I also think the same thing is going to happen to the upcoming Mario movie made by Illumination Entertainment, because I know they are going to make the Toads the Minion stand-ins in the same way the animals were the Minion stand-ins in The Lorax.
Well, the other Pokémon movies were thrashed by critics when they released to theaters, because they made watching the show a prerequisite to properly enjoying the films. But yeah, since it was based on one spin-off game, you got me. When I see all three films, I’ll be fair and if I liked them, I’ll tell you. But the cynic in me has a feeling that Detective Pikachu will be the exception, rather than the new rule.
It might take a smidge of time for this to become the norm, this Sonic movie still got made after all, but Detective Pikachu is looking very good, and with its inevitable success, more of such films will follow.
What's more, Showtime is trying to adapt Halo into a TV series, and Hulu is developing a series based off of Hitman, they take these carefully and make great shows out of them, and the curse will indeed begin to break.

That is mostly because of Superstition. The very first video game movie Super Mario Bros, was such a flop. That the next one also flopped. Most live made video game movies don't do very well. Even the first 2 Tomb Raider movies barely squeaked past. Though any animated video game movie did pretty good though.
I dunno about that. Both animated "Darkstalkers" Cartoons weren't so fondly remembered, not to mention the Graz "Street Fighter" cartoon, "Captain N: The Game Master", and just about anything after "Sonic SATAM". I think it's safe to say that Hollywood doesn't get Video Games...YET. Comparatively speaking, Video Games are the new kids on the entertainment block, and it'll take them a little while more to finally get it right. I mean, look at Marvel. They started off with cartoons in the 60's with limited animation, and for the longest time couldn't get a friggin' movie made (REALLY. In fact, I believe someone once said something along the lines of "well, it may be a BAD film, but it's not as bad as Marvel. Those guys'll NEVER make a movie"). Heck, there was even a gag in the "Freakazoid" cartoon where he tried to bribe Fanboy with an autographed picture of Stan Lee (RIP), with Fanboy replying "who?" and Freakazoid saying "Dunno" before tossing the picture to the side.
My point is, they are getting better (The 2018 Tomb Raider film, Rampage and Detective Pikachu all prove that). However, we do need to be supportive of video game films from our end as well, and not constantly poo-poo them simply because of the rough start they had, else they really WON'T get better.
