Honestly speaking, for the time MAL API has been down, I'd probably have already developed a solid version of MAL API in Django REST.

I mean, given someone has already decided what goes into the database the rest should be just mapping the tables to models, serializers, views, and last but not least authentication.

I mean, 80% of this work should be straightforward - why it's taking 3 months, though.

(PS: I'm not bragging).

Seeing solid and Django in the same sentence hurts.

Because nobody can fix this site with its spaghetti code without rewriting it. When many, I included, said this they either didn't care or didn't want to rewrite it because "it works".

Oh well when it happens, it happens.

It's Wednesday, it's almost the end of working week so ETA, please.

Also, I'm loyally pissed that it can take this long to only get the API working to the extent that I'd even be willing to work on an API and be responsible for it - on one condition - MAL gives me access to their databases - ETA, year end(API complete with documentation for developers(in fact the current MAL doesn't seem to be documented))

In fact, I don't see why MAL shouldn't give me access to their databases since this is not a commercial site and the most sensitive information that their database could contain is user information(which includes but is not limited to my personal details).

So, since I have demonstrated technical expertise, I mean, I got a bug on my very first days on MAL, they'd probably have a good reason for denying me access to their databases.

Which we are waiting to hear out.

(PS: And, I think I did edit this post)

I don't care whether they're strongly related to each other(on this site) - the bottomline, the BOTTOMLINE is, they don't have to be strongly related.

Dear Users,

Thank you for using MyAnimeList.

We are currently reviewing the steps necessary to complete development of a new API, which would allow third party applications to function again. Up until this point, third party applications have made use of an older API to interface with MAL, allowing them to interact with the site and function. When the API was disabled at the end of May, this caused the majority of third party applications to stop functioning, as they were no longer able to interact with the site. It was also at this time that we elected to remove the official MyAnimeList application from the Google Play Store. In the spirit of fair competition, we intend to keep the official application only available to those who already had it downloaded, until such a time as third party applications are again available.

At this point we have no other information to share, but aim to provide bi-weekly updates on the situation.

Thank you for your patience, understanding and continued support of MyAnimeList.

The week is over - no update yet.

I would like and have already offered to work on this for free, though, as I said on MAL Discord, it would mean I only follow my own deadlines and not answer to anyone(I mean, since I'd be working on this all alone and I also have life happening).

On the other paw, if there was some sort of incentive to work on this - I'd totally be answerable, follow MAL rules, follow deadlines e.t.c

I think if anything has impressed me during this 3 month downtime it's the incredible lack of social skills of multiple members of this website. The arrogant, demanding pomposity of some of these kids in regards to something no-one is forcing them to use and what 99 percent of them are getting for free makes me laugh.

When people talk about anime fans being dweebs with no social skills, this is what they mean. It's almost sorted. Settle down.

Sooo what does this new update adds? Everything that is said on here is already known for everyone.

What happened to old API?
When will you accept the fact that there was a breach with API so the team had to write a new?
What will be the features of the new API?
Do we have a roadmap for the new API?
Can we expect a date for the new API?
etc. etc.

Without an API you can't make a third party app. Simple as it sounds. You can't even manage the login function.

It's free so you have no right to say something. Genius.
Another problem is we already warn them again and again but since it just works™, DeNA didn't tried to do something about it. Until it completely broke that is. Many people couldn't even take a save for their list. That is just absurd.

Not because you aren't forced to use it and the service is technically free means you have to shut up and accept all the shit they give you.
If you want to talk about impressive things, it would be the way a company that isn't new and appears to have some knowledge has demonstrated that they care so little for this community with the way the have shared what's going on and dealt with information sharing. Yes, there have been progress and much better than with previous owners... but the lack of care says something.

this happened due to greed, lack of motivation, and incompetence. If you were trying to actually fix the problem, and avoid "security risks" would you be restoring the site before fixing the api? no, no you wouldn't. But it hardly matters, nobody bothers with the social aspect of this site due to the major harassment risk you have allowed for almost a decade. If only MAL had hired or even made a point of associating with elite developers like me.

I'm not greedy but highly motivated and competent.

On the other paw, my economic status is a lot much lower than that of most people who use this site and the API so, to some extent a bit reluctant to work for free.

Who is being charitable? To me working on an API is more or less like, okay something I really like/would really enjoy doing.

It's not exactly charity, though, it's quite possible I can do something worthwhile for MAL.

Also, I think it's quite clear I won't be doing it for free. #Talent

2.5 months of no exposure in toxicity of other people, feels refreshing.

Take your time. We are not going anywhere or something.

I thought that a simple sentence but not for everyone it seems.

Is there any intention of turning the API back on so certain programs as Taiga are usable again?
Or was it never meant for people to be able to create additional programs for MAL?

Oh, we finally got to hear from the Overlord after three weeks of radio silence? Let's see what they have to say.

So basically they have no plan and told us what we've already known for a while now. Wonderful.

Well, these people don't seem to have a plan. I mean, I did suggest a plan after which a furry claimed that I am not being charitable.

This leaves me wondering, if MAL hired a developer, assuming they have all the money and pay him even 100k(which really high for a developer) - is it possible to make the developer become a MAL user ?

I'm here, ready to do something for MAL, I said on MAL discord that I need $1000/pm as I'm not "formally" employed.

That way it looks like I'm trying to use the current situation on MAL to solve my own problem. So, well, I said, let's make $500/pm - Is that something MAL community can afford ?

It's not like I'm trying to make money to support myself because, honestly, if I got a formal job, which I can, I'd be making a lot more money than that.

And, well, in a few years, may be even one year, I'll probably have my own money but I'll still be working on the MAL API for the same $500/pm.

This looks really fair, to be honest.

Why not email them then? Apply for a position. I wouldn't count on it though.
