An announcement has been made on Crunchyroll's official site that states they will begin to digitally distribute twelve different Kodansha manga titles through a new service called "Crunchyroll Manga."

This service will publish the latest chapters of these twelve manga titles the same day they are released in Japan. Both free and paid users of the site will be able to use this new service. Free users will have access to the latest chapters, while paid users will have access to the latest chapters along with all previous chapters for each title. All this content is available in 170 countries, including the U.S. and UK. "Crunchyroll Manga" launches on October 30, 2013 with additional details being revealed then as well.

The twelve manga titles include:
1. Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)
2. Fairy Tail
3. Uchuu Kyoudai (Space Brothers)
4. UQ Holder!
5. Nazo no Kanojo X (Mysterious Girlfriend X)
6. Kimi no Iru Machi (A Town Where You Live)
7. Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo (Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches)
8. Kamisama no Iutoori Ni (As the God of Death Dictates 2)
9. Wagatsuma-san wa Ore no Yome (My Wife is Wagatsuma-san)
10. Apocalypse no Toride (Fortress of the Apocalypse)
11. Coppelion
12. Nanatsu no Taizai (The Seven Deadly Sins)

This is huge but a lot of details are missing and the service already starts next week. Crunchyroll should have announced it sooner imo.

wow, i wonder what mangastream is going to do. i guess they were told to stop scanlating. oh well, faster releases for us. and potentially mangastream will work on slower released mangas like magi or kingdom.

I'm sure something had to have been stopping Crunchyroll from saying something about this. An announcement like this I would think wouldn't get left unannounced until a few days before launch.

As for missing details they say in the article "We know that’s not all the info, but expect all the facts to be revealed when Crunchyroll Manga officially launches on 10/30" so we just have to wait until then.

Not so, I think. At most, they'd stop scanlating Fairy Tail and Shingeki No Kyojin.

Yep, I've read it. It's just so much they need to explain, scanlations may be available for all of these titles (and most are caught up) but they can't tell people to read them. They have to make a ridiculous amount of chapters officially available before they can simulpub these titles from my perspective.

I don't follow any of those manga (not that I read most of them) as soon as they are out (usually marathon it after many chapters are out), except fairy tail. It's not enough for me to go back to crunchyroll, unless they add even more manga.

The only problem I see with this is a limitation to the US, essentially leaving the rest of the Western countries without (il/semi-)legal opportunities to check out new manga... which was honestly one of the main reasons why certain series got popular in the first place here. They better have European services available as well soon.

It's available to 170 countries, including U.S. and UK. I'll add that into post.

The only one I am caught up to is UQ Holder so I am fine with jumping to a legit source for that, especially with this week off.

I wish there was a way to catch up for free, 30 dollars a year for 12 titles seems a bit much.

Well I will test it with UQ, and if I like it, may try Fairy Tail through it.

A) Where does it say that it is $30 per year?
B) On what planet is $30 per year a high price to pay? Let's say you were going to read these legally in Japanese. They come from 6 different magazines, some weekly, some monthly. I was able to find prices for five of them from CD Japan. Assuming the other is about the average of the monthly magazine prices (all but one are monthlies) the total monthly cost would be about $42. That makes the yearly cost over $500.

Even if you were just going to read the ones in Weekly Shounen Magazine (which is close to half of them) it costs about $2.62 per week, so for 52 weeks that makes over $135 per year.

How is $30 per year a high price again? Oh! Compared to reading them illegally! Well, yes, paying for anything is more expensive than steeling! That's a given. But paying something as small as $2.50 per month to support the artists and authors who make stories you love to read, that is really not expensive at all! I would bet that they'll make more on the pittance that they get from advertising from the free users than they will from premium users if that is all they are going to charge. It would be a bargain at the same price as the anime membership, around $7 per month.

Plus you only need to get a premium membership for long enough to read the back catalog. Once you have caught up, you can cancel and read the free stuff each week. (Or month, as the case may be. MGX is a monthly)

C) Who knows, it could be included in the Premium Anime membership, in which case you get new anime weekly as well as new manga.

A) It is 4.99 a month, 4.99 a month times 12 months is 30 dollars roughly.

B)I don't have a huge source of income, I have to choose what I get, if given the choice I will buy 3 physical manga a year(most likely of UQ Holder next year) then pay for digital rights.

C) I just wait a week and watch the shows with ads, it is fine, I can stand the ads and I get to watch the shows, I wish that model was what they did.

Crunchyroll has come a long way. I noticed this season they are simulcasting almost every show I'm watching and now that they are going to supply manga as well, I'm just about ready to start paying for a premium account. Only thing holding me back now is the fact that my internet is too slow to smoothly stream 720p quality or better (which is one of the largest benefits to premium users).

"Free users, and non-manga members will only be able to read the latest chapters with ads until the next chapter is simulpubbed. " (Crunchyroll)

To me, this sentence doesn't make clear whether you have to pay to read older chapters, since it states that free users will be able to read the latest chapters (with ads, but honestly, who cares about ads).

This is a breakthrough in the online manga licensing model. Since JManga was discontinued some time ago, Crunchyroll must have been exploring new models other than the traditional pay-per-volume and pay-per-title ones.

I hope the All Access Black Friday $50/year deal includes manga too but I will likely have to get it even if it isn't. Anime, drama, manga, perfect combination and so cheap! So many titles for so little money, it really is a no brainer if you have a job it isn't much money at all.

Crunchy first they destroy fan subbed anime and now most fan subbers are lazy and base their subs off crunchies half assed release. Now we can look forward to quick released "Official translated manga" most likely lacking TL notes and overly Americanized. -_- and before you go off on my bashing crunchyrolled I have a personal issue with them about a business deal a site I worked for had with them in 07-08 were they pulled out, basically telling us to go screw ourselves leaving me with what took 8 months of work to fix.

I watch a lot of anime but I have never gotten into manga, mostly because it isn't very accessible. However, this kind of service on crunchyroll is something that I'd be interested in checking out. I think there are a lot of people in similar situations, who don't care about scanlations and aren't avid manga readers, but would consider starting if it was easily and legally available.

With manga and anime being so intimately connected, I think this is a great move for the industry and for crunchyroll. I hope it leads to more interaction and transparency between Japanese publishers and the rest of the world!

Check your math. That's approximately $5/month, and there are twelve months so 5 x 12 which is $60 per year.

Anyways, wow look at CR go. Kind of cool, I guess, although I can't tell if they meant that free members can only read the latest chapters and not older chapters.

I would not recommend getting a sub to CR for the manga along, CR's already tried the digital manga thing once with Jmanga, which imploded earlier this year leaving all those who bought manga losing access to all manga they purchased. (I was among those, I was not happy.)

And yes, CR was part of Jmanga, it was an alliance between Crunchyroll and Bitway Co., Ltd.

So while I may take advantage of this because I already have a CR sub, I expect it to go down in flames within a few years and do not count on it being around later on. At least they seem to have some decent titles this time, Jmanga's were nearly all niche ones.

God, neologisms make the linguistics nerd in me happy.

But yeah, this could be interesting. Unlike a lot of anime/manga fans, I actually know the meaning of the word "delayed gratification", so I can actually wait for legit releases instead of impatiently reading scans.

If this gets rolling...it could be big.

I don't get it. Does that mean Crunchyroll has this arbitrary "window" of time in which free users can view the latest chapter before it gets locked to premium-only users? That sucks, because if I forget or if I somehow can't access the latest chapter in time, I gotta pay?

I've never used CrunchyRoll for anime but this sounds like a good service. I'm guessing (or hoping) that you pay a monthly subscription that allows you to read all the chapters you want? If so that sounds pretty neat, better than Jmanga where you had to pay for each chap/vol.

I looked through CR's website but I didn't find an answer... How much will the service cost per month? I looked for prices but only found the 5 dollars per month for the premium membership ( and I think that's for the anime service only?). I'm probably missing something so this might be a stupid question.

It's simply a subscription program like Netflix or Hulu Plus. You don't own any of the content, instead you pay a monthly fee to access all of it. If the program ends up being shuttered, you're not losing anything because you owned none of it in the first place.

It's $4.99 a month for a library that will expand to over 50 titles in the next ten months. There ain't much to hate.
